Map of Sorrento: the town in 32 verified pins

Sorrento stands on the north side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, a cliff-top town looking across the Bay of Naples at Vesuvius, about 25 km southeast of Naples city. It is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast in a transport sense: the coast's Positano hangs over the ridge to the south-east, reachable from Sorrento by ferry from Marina Piccola or by the SITA road coaches from the station. What Sorrento is not is the Amalfi Coast itself; it belongs to the province of Naples, while Positano, Praiano and Amalfi are across the peninsula boundary in Salerno province.

So this page deliberately claims only the town. Marina Piccola (pin 25) is the working port: ferries and hydrofoils to Capri, Ischia, Naples and Positano leave from its pier, the NLG ticket office keeps 07:00 to 19:00 hours at Piazza Marinai d'Italia, and the beach clubs to its west are a paid-sand economy. Marina Grande (pin 12) is the fishing harbour a kilometre further west: no scheduled ferries, painted houses, fish restaurants and the town's easiest free-in-parts beach. From Piazza Tasso, every old-town pin is inside 5 minutes on foot, the station is 4 to 5 minutes, and the museum is 7. The drops to the water are the planning items: 8 to 10 minutes down to the ferry pier (less with the lift from pin 8), 10 to 12 minutes down to Marina Grande, and the climb back up takes about half again as long. Walk estimates assume roughly 80 m a minute; add a slide rule for August crowds on Via San Cesareo, where 130 m can feel like a pilgrimage.

The one-axis rule that comes out of the table: plan the morning on the flat pins, spend the middle of the day on the water pins, and leave one climb in the legs for the afternoon.
