Sorrento, Italy: An Independent City Guide

Start where the buses drop you. Piazza Tasso is the zero point: the Tasso statue, the Sant'Antonino column, and the edge of the Vallone dei Mulini ravine behind the buildings, viewable from the bridge on Via Fuoro, no ticket, no access to the floor.

Two minutes east, the Duomo keeps its marble bell tower over the lane. Free, a working church, fifteen minutes covers it; the Basilica di Sant'Antonino sits two minutes further on the square that carries the patron's name.

The old town lanes run from here: Via San Cesareo's arches and the Sedile Dominova, the nobility's frescoed loggia, free from the street at any hour.

West again for the green half: the Chiostro di San Francesco with its crossed tuff vaults, and one minute on, the Villa Comunale terrace over the water. Sunset belongs here; the benches fill an hour before it.

The Museo Correale asks $17.40 (€15) and closes Mondays, plus every winter from 6 January to 2 April. If the doors are open and you care about collections at all, it is the best paid hour in town.

The long walk: forty-some minutes west to Bagni Regina Giovanna, the Roman-ruins cove with the natural arch and the swimming hole. Water shoes, no facilities, the best free swim on this stretch.

And the days beyond the town run on water and rail: Capri by ferry, Pompeii by train, the Amalfi Coast by boat or the coast road, all routed from the day trips index.

The rule that saves dinners: the menus with photographed dishes and flag menus on the square charge for the view, and the places two streets inland feed the people who cook them. The restaurant hub names venues only where a citable list backs them; the food post covers the dishes to hunt.

The town's plate: gnocchi alla sorrentina baked, not boiled, the lemon in everything from the sfusato groves, and fish at the harbour tables on Marina Grande. The cooking classes run two to four hours and hand you the recipe; the pasta and tiramisu class is the default first one.

The Campania Express premium train, $17.40 (€15) each way, is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Autumn arrivals ride the ordinary Circumvesuviana at $6.26 (€5.40).

Museo Correale closes every Monday and shuts for the winter from 6 January to 2 April. A Monday visit in February finds the doors shut and the town quiet.

The coast ferry season runs 1 April to 3 November on the 2026 NLG sheet: Positano at $24.90 (€21.50) each way, Amalfi on the same lines. Winter visitors ride the coast road buses instead.

Capri charges the town a landing fee, $5.80 (€5) per person from April to October and half that in winter, on top of every ferry and tour; the ferry page keeps the arithmetic.

The missed ferry. The last Capri return leaves at 17:45 and the summer 09:00 queues are real; the day trip page builds the afternoon backwards from the pier.

The Monday. Correale is closed and half the coast's small museums follow; the one-day plan routes the free churches in instead.

The port mix-up. Boarding a Marina Grande dinner for a Marina Piccola ferry costs the crossing; the map page pins both with the walk times.

The unpaid-validate fine. Circumvesuviana tickets must be stamped before boarding; the arrival page walks the machine.

The beach disappointment. Sorrento's shore is rocky platforms, not sand; the beaches page says where to swim and what to bring.
